About the Department
The Department of English at Kavitha’s College of Arts and Science, Vaiyappamalai was
established with the introduction of the B.A. English programme in 2015 and the M.A. English
programme in 2018. Since its inception, the department has developed into an important
language department within the institution, offering quality education in English Language and
Literature. It provides a three-year Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme and a two-year Master of
Arts (M.A.) programme designed to introduce students to the diverse world of literature,
language, and communication. The programmes aim to enhance students’ intellectual abilities,
communication skills, and literary appreciation while preparing them for higher studies and
various professional opportunities. The department encourages students to engage in literary
analysis, creative expression, language learning, and cultural understanding through active
mentoring by experienced faculty members.
The curriculum includes a wide range of academic areas such as English Literature,
Linguistics, Creative Writing, Comparative Literature, and Cultural Studies. Students study
different literary genres including poetry, drama, and novels from various historical periods and
cultural backgrounds. The syllabus also covers Translation Studies, American and British
Literature, and Media and Communication, helping students strengthen their reading, writing,
and analytical abilities. To meet contemporary academic and professional demands, the course
integrates modern literature, digital communication, and interdisciplinary perspectives.The
department emphasizes practical learning through seminars, presentations, creative writing
workshops, internships, and project work, which improve students’ language proficiency, critical
thinking, and professional competence. Interactive teaching methods such as lectures, group
discussions, seminars, and project-based learning are widely used, along with audio-visual and
multimedia tools. The department’s qualified faculty members actively participate in

the students. The department library has more than 1000 books related to English Literature,
Linguistics, Literary Theory, Cultural Studies, and other allied subjects. It also provides access to
journals, reference books, and digital resources. The library offers a quiet and comfortable
reading environment, which helps students in research, assignments, and project work. These
resources encourage students to develop strong reading habits and enhance their academic and
intellectual growth.
